Allen Bradley Center of Excellence

The Flint Hills Technical College industrial engineering program has a new energy and automation lab named the Allen Bradley Center of Excellence.

Hands-on seminars will be provided in the Center in all aspects of software and hardware including compact logic, drives, RS Linx Communications, four and seven series power flex drives, and micro-processors. Industrial engineering technology students will benefit from the center by having access to cutting edge technology that will prepare them for high paying jobs in local and regional industries. Training will also be provided to local industry engineering teams through workshops.

“We are excited about the lab and the fact that it is cutting edge technology. Students will be trained on software and hardware that they will be using in industries like Hills Pet Food. It is the “Cadillac” of software” said Jerry Linsea, industrial engineering technology instructor.

The conception of the Allen Bradley Center of Excellence began last year with the support of the industrial engineering program advisory board. The initial support team was comprised of industrial engineering technology Board Chair, Tom Stebbins and board member, Joey Lemay. Lemay is a former student of the industrial engineering technology program and was the winner of the National Skills USA competition in the industrial engineering category. Stebbins and Lemay are both members of the Menu Midwest Engineering Team.

The Allen Bradley Center of Excellence will be supported by Rockwell Automation software. Mark Turner, of Stanion Electric in Wichita, was instrumental in assisting the instructors in the industrial engineering program in the application process and in receiving the license for the Rockwell Automation software. Turner also helped with the establishment of the Rockwell Automation Educational Support Program. Membership in the program provides deep discounts to FHTC for Rockwell software and Allen Bradley hardware.

“Training, income and job opportunities for students trained in the Center of Excellence will be greatly increased and students will be trained in all three areas of compact logic including installation, programming and troubleshooting,” said David Budke, industrial engineering technology instructor.

Students successfully completing courses in the Industrial Engineering Technology program will develop the skills to install, service, and repair machines and equipment common to all industries. The curriculum includes instruction in residential and industrial electricity, heating and air conditioning, motor controls, programmable controllers, conveyor technology, control circuits, variable drives, pneumatics and hydraulics. The students will be prepared to enter the workforce with advanced technical skills required by industry's high standards.

A Beginning SLC500 Seminar using RSLogix 500™ v8.0 Software and Drives Programming with PowerFlex 4 & 7 Series Drives was offered on March 25 at Flint Hills Technical College in cooperation with Stanion Wholesale Electric Company. Students will learn the unique features and abilities of Rockwell Software’s latest Microsoft ® Windows XP SLC Programming Software. Individuals interested in the Allen Bradley Center can call 343-4600 or 800-711-6947 for more information.
