Machine Tool Technology

Mission:

Students successfully completing the Machine Tool Technology program will have the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in the global workplace. Students will demonstrate skills in Manual Machining, Computer Numerical Controlled Machining, and Computer Numerical Controlled Programming.

Career Paths:

Graduates from the Machine Tool Technology program will be prepared to seek job opportunities in a variety of manufacturing industries, including:
  • Automotive Industry
  • Tool & Die Industry
  • Plastic Extrusion & Injection Industry
  • Aircraft Industry
  • Agricultural Equipment Industry
  • Maintenance and repair shops

The Industry:

Machine Tool Technicians work with special inspection tools and manufacturing equipment, including band saws, drill presses, manual lathes, manual mills, cnc lathes, cnc mills, computer-aided drafting (cad), computer-aided machine development (cam), live tooling lathes, and cmm inspection equipment. Technicians are required to read a blueprint and program the correct "G" and "M" codes needed to produce a quality part on a cnc machine.

Machinists usually work indoors in a shop environment as part of a team. Individuals should possess strong interpersonal skills for interacting with co-workers. Individuals who are responsible and can manage their own time and effort make excellent machinists.

Individuals working in the manufacturing field need to possess excellent math skills and pay close attention to detail. Machinists should continually update their skills by participating in continuing education classes and attending seminars and trade shows.

Opportunities are not limited to those listed. Some technicians gain experience and later assume supervisory roles or become self-employed.

The Program:

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must have graduated from high school, have received a GED diploma, or be concurrently enrolled in high school.

Instruction

Machine Tool Technology is a program that can be completed in 18 months for a full-time student or 33 months for ahalf-time student. Students attend class Monday through Friday. Instruction covers technical skills needed by individuals to enter the work place as Machine Tool Technicians. Students spend approximately 20 percent of their time in the classroom and 80 percent in the lab. Classroom instruction includes lectures and demonstrations so students can learn the concepts of manufacturing. Student evaluation is competency-based, meaning that individual students must demonstrate, via written -examinations and lab work, practical knowledge and a required level of competency in conducting fundamental tasks. Students must meet certain minimum requirements to complete the program and receive a diploma.

Courses

The Associate of Applied Science degree, with a major in Machine Tool Technology, is a four-semester program that contains technical, advanced technical and general education courses. The advanced technical portion of this course is taught in the summer. Graduates will possess the knowledge and skills needed to program, tool and operate CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) mills and lathes. Graduates will also have the skills needed to draw and program in Mastercam. The Machine Tool Technology program advisory committee, composed of representatives from the manufacturing field, annually updates machining skills needed for immediate and successful employment.
