Instruction
Practical Nursing is a 48-college-credit program that prepares the student for an entry-level position as an LPN. The student will learn to give skilled bedside care to patients with less complex conditions in structured care settings. Planned and supervised experiences are directed toward teaching students to perform nursing measures with precision, safety, and efficiency consistent with current nursing standards of care. Clinical practice is correlated with entry level nursing concepts and introductory content from the biological and behavioral sciences. Qualified nurse educators guide students in the nursing process and care planning.
The program is fast-paced. Instruction takes place in the classroom, skills laboratory and clinical settings. Sixty percent of the program is based on theory instruction. Forty percent of the program involves hands-on experience demonstrated in skills lab and the various clinical settings. Clinical experiences are scheduled in hospitals, long-term care facilities and other health care agencies in the community.
Before beginning clinical experiences, students must have the following: a physical exam and up-to-date immunizations,. Under the guidance of their instructors in the clinical settings, students work with patients performing fundamental nursing procedures according to basic nursing standards. Graduates from the program are eligible to take the licensing examination to become Licensed Practical Nurses. A two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree is also available (this is not a RN).
