The Industry:

Health care service is a growing field that emphasizes providing medical care across the lifespan. Currently there is a high demand for well-educated professionals who work to prevent illness and restore health. Men and women with special knowledge and skills are needed to assist other health care professionals such as registered nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians. Licensed Practical Nurses fill that role.

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides skilled nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians. LPNs work with patients across the lifespan, from newborn to geriatrics. Students have the opportunity to work in a variety of health care fields such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, home health agencies, health departments, and physicians' offices. Nursing requires responsibility and time management skills. Generally, organizations in health care employ many people, so interaction with other employees and activities involving teamwork are important. Interpersonal communication skills are a must in order to assist patients in the various health care settings. Accordingly, nurses must be professional and competent, friendly and able to communicate with others in a variety of situations.

The Program:

Prerequisites

Must have graduated from high school or equivalent, have current CNA certification and 5 credits of Anatomy and Physiology with a lab.

Instruction

Practical Nursing is a 48-college-credit program that prepares the student for an entry-level position as an LPN. The student will learn to give skilled bedside care to patients with less complex conditions in structured care settings. Planned and supervised experiences are directed toward teaching students to perform nursing measures with precision, safety, and efficiency consistent with current nursing standards of care. Clinical practice is correlated with entry level nursing concepts and introductory content from the biological and behavioral sciences. Qualified nurse educators guide students in the nursing process and care planning.

The program is fast-paced. Instruction takes place in the classroom, skills laboratory and clinical settings. Sixty percent of the program is based on theory instruction. Forty percent of the program involves hands-on experience demonstrated in skills lab and the various clinical settings. Clinical experiences are scheduled in hospitals, long-term care facilities and other health care agencies in the community.

Before beginning clinical experiences, students must have the following: a physical exam, up-to-date immunizations, and current CPR certification. Under the guidance of their instructors in the clinical settings, students work with patients performing fundamental nursing procedures according to basic nursing standards. Graduates from the program are eligible to take the licensing examination to become Licensed Practical Nurses. A two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree is also available.
