Sustainable Living Center

Mission:


The mission of the center is to help the community and region address environmental and energy concerns through training, workshops, classes and conferences. 

The focal points are:
(a) Green building and energy efficiency,
(b) Local food production
(c) Recycling, and
(d) Alternative energy systems. 

Important Information:

We are in the early stages of developing this concept, so If you don’t see a workshop or class that addresses your interest and needs, let us know and we will work toward developing something that is helpful to you.  Please check this website periodically to get an update on what is being offered, from evening and day-long classes to conferences and workshops.

I will also be giving additional presentations away from the campus, that may be of interest.

Career Paths:

Through workshops, classes, and conferences, the center will provide training and information for the people of the state of Kansas and the Flint Hills region.  The center has been developed to address the needs of the community, and it is our intention to offer programs that will help people get their ideas and projects implemented in their own homes or the community at large.

There are no prerequisites for the Sustainable Living Center Courses.

Currently the center is offering the following classes and will continue to add to these offerings as we continue to develop the center.

 

“Building Technology for the Energy Efficient Home”

Oct. 2 Thursday 7:30 – 4:00
Nov. 8 Saturday 7:30 – 4:00
Dec. 10 Wednesday 7:30 – 4:00
Jan. 24 Saturday 7:30 – 4:00
Feb. 24 Tuesday 7:30 – 4:00
Mar. 26 Thursday 7:30 – 4:00
This 1 day workshop covers – framing techniques for high efficiency homes, alternative building systems and products, and an overview of the “GreenBuilding” process.

 

“Building a window solar collector”

November 3rd and 5th – 6:30 to 8:30

A 2 evenings, hands on class, where we will build 3 inexpensive window solar collectors. Designed for the do-it-yourselfer.

 

“Home Winterization for comfort and energy savings”

November 12th & 13th – 6:30 to 8:30

Explore the many simple and inexpensive ways to cut energy bills and increase the comfort level in your home. The class will be an open discussion and introduction to various materials and products that every home owner can use to cut down on electrical and gas usage.
