Catalog:

The Spectrum Patrons' catalog can be accessed from any internet connecte computer.  The catalog is easy to use and allows you to search and browse for books owned by FHTC.

Online Databases:
Databases with full-text information both in magazines and books is available for all programs. For a list of  databases or to search by program  go to these pages.

Library Instruction:

Library Instruction is provided by the Librarian to help students, faculty, and staff become familiar with the services available in the Library, and to help locate information and conduct research.  The content and format of Library Instruction can be negotiated with the Librarian.

Commonly used formats consist of:

  • A classroom visit by the Librarian.  The Librarian will come to a class and inform students and faculty about the best resources available for completing assignments, including reference books, circulating books, electronic databases and Internet sites.

  • Library handouts:  The Librarian can develop and distribute a handout that lists the best resources for the assignment and a handout on citing sources.

  • In-class library research:  Instructors may schedule a particular class to come to the Library during class so the Librarian can show where the best resources are and help students get started in their research process.

Interlibrary loan:
Along with the materials within the Library, students, faculty, and staff may also access additional titles through Interlibrary Loan (ILL for short).  Both books and magazine or journal articles are available through this service.  Request forms are available in the Library.  These forms should be filled out accurately and completely.

  • Books:  Students, faculty, and staff may borrow books through ILL.  (Reference books, rare books and audio or visual recordings generally are not circulated through ILL).  PLAN AHEAD!  The items you request will be mailed from the lending library.  Please allow a week to 10 days for a book to arrive.  The borrowing period for ILL items varies from two to four weeks. (Materials from ESU and the Emporia Public Library will not be requested.)

  • Articles: Students, faculty, and staff may request photocopies of articles through ILL.  These will be yours to keep.  Usually there is no charge for photocopies.  However, when filling out the request form, please indicate the "maximum cost" you are willing to pay should the lending library charge for their copies.  Please allow a week to 10 days for articles to arrive.  (Materials from ESU and the Emporia Public Library will not be requested.)

Reference Questions:
Reference questions are welcome either face-to-face, via the phone, or by e-mail (see contact information above.)

Laptop PCs:
The Library has three laptop computers which may be checked out by students, faculty, and staff for over night use.  These are checked out by and returned to the Librarian.

CIRCULATION

In order to check out books the borrower must have a record in the automated system.  This takes just a few minutes to create.  Check-out periods are flexible and set according to the needs of the borrower, unless the item(s) is being heavily used by a class.  In this case the check-out period will be overnight.

Magazines and journals may be checked out with a flexible due date as explained above.  The check out process is manual and takes just a few minutes.

A few items are designated Reference on the spine label.  These books are for use in the Library only.

There are no fines assessed against overdue items, but students, faculty and staff are encouraged to return or renew materials in a timely manner.  Overdue notices are distributed periodically.  If overdue material is not returned or payment is not made to replace lost material, a "HOLD" will be placed on the student's transcript at the end of the semester.  This will prevent a student from receiving semester grades and transcripts from FHTC.  This is also true if a student withdraws from classes.
