Emergency Medical Technician
Mission:
The mission of the Emergency Medical Services Technology program is to prepare students for entry-level positions in the EMS profession and advancement in their chosen career. Students will participate in planned experiences directed toward performing pre-hospital care activities with precision, safety and efficiency consistent with concepts and practices of health care entities and disciplines.
Important Information:
Start date for EMT is August 15th and runs through April 16. The classes are Monday and Thursday evenings from 5 - 9 pm. Also one Saturday per month is required. Must be 17 years-old to take this program.
Transition courses:
EMR Transition course will run 7-22-11 through 7-24-11 from 8am to 5pm each day.
EMT Transition will be 8-6-11, 8-7-11, 8-13-11, 8-14-11 from 8am to 5pm each day.


Description:
EMT's should be able to work in a variety of weather conditions. The field involves intense teamwork with many disciplines— ambulance, fire, police, hospital. Technicians generally work with ambulance departments and fire departments; however, there are job opportunities available with hospitals and clinics.
The job can be very physically demanding. The work requires the carrying of heavy loads, often down stairs. Technicians must deal with relatives and the public as well as patients; therefore, tact and diplomacy are good qualities to have. A technician must be a “people” person as well as a “technical” person.

The Industry:
According to the Kansas Bureau of Labor Statistics entry level Emergency Medical Technicians can expect to receive an annual salary of $19,360-$30,000 (Kansas Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2009).

Prerequisites
Students must:
- Take and pass the ASSET test with a score of 37 in all areas
- Graduate from a high school or have received a GED diploma
- Must pass a criminal background check
Instruction
Instruction takes place in the classroom and hands-on practice labs. Once successfully mastered, students will use their skills in ambulance and emergency room internships.
