Business Administrative Technology

Mission:

The mission of the Business Administrative Technology curriculum is to prepare students to enter office professions utilizing technology essential to business, applying knowledge and ethics in a diverse and changing global society, while using acquired skills in teamwork and leadership.

Description:

Today’s titles of office workers include administrative assistant, administrative office manager, administrative information specialist, administrative receptionist, desktop publishing/graphics specialist, executive assistant, office specialist, and office professional. Some specialized titles include legal assistant, financial assistant, and payroll clerk.

Career Paths:

  • large corporations and public/government agencies

The Industry:

Every office or business needs office personnel who are skilled or specialized in their type of operation. From a one-person office to large organizations, there is need for individuals with the variety of computer skills, human relations skills, teamwork capabilities, and analytical thinking skills necessary to contribute to the effectiveness of their organization. Specialized skills in the legal, and accounting fields may also be necessary.

The Program:

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must have graduated from high school, have received a GED diploma, or be concurrently enrolled in high school as a senior.
  • Must demonstrate and apply proper keyboarding technique with at least 30-wpm speed.
  • Must be able to attend class all day Monday through Friday.
Online Prerequisites
  • Must have access to a computer with Windows XP or higher
  • Must have an Internet connection
  • Must have an e-mail account
  • Must have a printer
  • Must basic computer literacy
  • Must have Microsoft Office 2007 (Standard or Professional)

Instruction

Classes consist of lecture, guided practices, demonstrations, small group discussions, classroom presentations, Internet research, e-mail, and computer applications. This program includes hands-on training along with work experience.

Technical education courses include: Software programs, 10-key calculator/keypad, accounting, office technologies and procedures, technical writing, keyboarding, supervision, transcription, Microsoft Office certification, records control.

Students in Bussiness Administrative Technoology can earn a Nine-month Technical Certificate or two-year Associate Degree.

The Associate of Applied Science degree, with a major in Business Administrative Technology, is a four-semester program that contains technical, advanced technical and general education courses. After completing the certificate program, students have an opportunity to specialize in their area of interest: legal assisting or accounting. These specialized areas, with the provision of in-depth studies, also represent employment opportunities for graduates.

The Business Administrative Technology certificate program, which contains technical courses, is two semesters in length. A program advisory committee, composed of practitioners, annually updates employer expectations, and career opportunities. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to perform numerous office activities (accounting, filing, transcription) and use the latest technology (computers software, internet). For graduates wanting to continue their education, certificate courses are transferable to the Business Administrative Technology AAS degree program.
