Description:

Machine Tool technicians work with special inspection tools and manufacturing equipment, including computer numerical controlled lathes, computer numerical controlled mills, live tooling numerical controlled lathes, computer-aided machine development (CAM), manual mills, manual lathes and CMM inspection equipment. Technicians are required to understand blueprints and computer numerical controlled programming needed to produce quality parts for the machine tool industry.

Machinists work indoors in a shop environment as part of a team. Individuals should possess strong interpersonal skills for interacting with co-workers.

Machine Tool Technology students will work with 750,000 Dollars worth of state of the art equipment including:

• MAZAK Nexus 100-II CNC Lathe
• Daewoo Puma 6-s CNC Lathe
• Haas Super Mini CNC Mill
• Mitsubishi M-V5Cn CNC Mill
• Mastercam X5

Career Paths:

There are many employment opportunities for men and women trained in Machine Tool Technology.  Successful completer opportunities include:

• Automobile and aircraft manufacturers
• Maintenance and repair shops
• Manufacturing of all metal goods and plastic injection mold manufactures

The Industry:

Machinists design and fabricate parts used in a wide array of products varying from the space shuttle to airplanes, cars and all of the injection molds use to make plastic products. This industry is involved in the making of nearly every manufactured product that the public uses. Demand exists for professionals who have the skill and ability to program and manufacture quality parts.

The Program:

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must have graduated from high school, have received a GED diploma, or be concurrently enrolled in high school.

Instruction

Students can earn a technical certificate in Machine Tool Technology after just two semesters of study (August through May), with an opportunity to continue the technical portion of the Associate of Applied Science degree with an additional semester of training (May through August). Students attend class Monday through Friday. Instruction covers technical skills needed by individuals to enter the work place as Machine Tool Technicians. Students spend approximately 20 percent of their time in the classroom and 80 percent in the lab. Classroom instruction includes lectures and demonstrations so students can learn the concepts of manufacturing. Student evaluation is competency-based, meaning that individual students must demonstrate, via written -examinations and lab work, practical knowledge and a required level of competency in conducting fundamental tasks. Students must meet certain minimum requirements to complete the program and receive a diploma.
