From a one-person office to large organizations, individuals trained in office management, computer software, accounting, transcription and legal assisting are in high-demand. Students learn how to be productive and efficient leaders within an office setting, and are provided real-life working situations as an administrative assistant, office professional, office manager, financial assistant, and payroll clerk through internship opportunities.
Business Administrative Technology offers a technical certificate and associate of applied science degree option.
The technical certificate is a one-year program. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to perform numerous office activities (accounting, filing, transcription) and use the latest technology (computers software, internet). For graduates wanting to continue their education, certificate courses are transferable to the Business Administrative Technology AAS degree program.
The associate of applied science degree is a two-year program that contains technical and general education courses. Students also have an opportunity to complete additional internships and earn advanced training in office activities and the latest office technology. Both the one and two year options are available completely online.
Within an office setting, there is need for individuals with the variety of computer skills, human relations skills, teamwork capabilities, and analytical thinking skills necessary to contribute to the effectiveness of their organization. Specialized skills in legal and accounting fields may also be necessary.

I began my career as a victim advocate to fulfill my desire to work in a helping profession. I parlayed that into becoming the executive director of a non profit organization where I was responsible for the business side of the organization including human resources, payroll, accounts receivable and payable. It was the catalyst that piqued my interest in business. I then worked in the corporate world as a training specialist for six years. It was there that I gained an interest in the soft skills side of business leadership and management training. I took those skills with me as the communications director for a non profit prior to coming back to the world of education. I have found that through advocacy, training, and teaching, I have been able to be in a helping field in varying degrees. I feel like I’ve found a place where all of the favorite pieces of my career fit here at FHTC.
The Business Administrative Technology program has something for everyone. We have instructors from varied backgrounds that bring their real world experiences into the classroom. There are very few jobs that do not require the use of computer skills. The BAT program is a great fit for everything from working in an office environment to running your own business. We teach business and computerized accounting, leadership and professional development, communication for business, and advanced Microsoft applications. Students can earn Microsoft Specialist certification as well as Office Proficiency Assessment Certification.
We have a great group of instructors and adjuncts at FHTC who love to see students succeed. Our goal in the BAT program is to give personalized instruction to help students find their passion for a career of their choice. We don’t want to train students to just find a job, we want them to find their career.
After college, I spent five years at a printing press manufacturer (Didde Press) in the industrial engineering department. Then, after a short stint as a small business owner, I spent five years teaching fifth and sixth grade at a small Christian school. After that, I spent 25 years in the real estate, but decided in 2008, that I wanted to get back into teaching at a deeper level.
In spite of the fact that I spent most of my professional life as a Realtor®, I have always enjoyed teaching. Prior to becoming a broker, I taught upper elementary grades for 5 years. Then, while owning and operating a real estate brokerage, I taught continuing education classes for the Kansas Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. My wife says I enjoy having a captive audience for my corny jokes.
I have been a teacher for many years, mostly teaching in the health related field. However, I spent many years as a corporate training supervisor for Birch Telecom. In that capacity, our team was responsible for all training including new hire training, technology systems training, product/software upgrade training, and professional development training for supervisor/manager level employees. When the opportunity to become a Business Administrative Technology instructor at FHTC opened up, I thought it was a great fit combining my love of teaching with business and office skills I had gained through working in the corporate world.
I think people are always the key to any successful organization. Our program stands out because we have skilled, caring, dedicated instructors who truly want to see our students succeed and who do everything we can to help ensure their success. Those attributes are not only apparent in our program, but is a theme I see throughout our college. From the beginning of enrollment through the final hugs and proud smiles on graduation day, everyone here makes student success their priority and that speaks volumes to our students. It makes me proud to be an instructor at FHTC.
